Orthotics are shoe inserts that are intended to correct an abnormal, or irregular walking pattern, alleviate any pain in the foot or leg and improve a person's posture. They are either inserted in a shoe or integrated into the shoe's design so that they become a part of the shoe's sole.

Custom orthotics differ from inserts that you can buy at any store because they are specially made to conform to the unique shape of an individual's foot. They perform functions that make standing, walking, and running more comfortable and efficient by altering slightly the angles at which the foot strikes a walking or running surface.

Different types of orthotics are available depending on the individuals needs and daily activities necessitating the orthotics. Foot orthotics fall into three broad categories: those that primarily attempt to change foot function, those that are primarily protective in nature, and those that combine functional control and protection.

Doctors of podiatric medicine prescribe orthotics as a conservative approach to many foot problems or as a method of control after certain types of foot surgery; their use is highly successful.

At first, when orthotics are worn, they do not feel like they fit well, but after at least a week of use, they coform to the person's foot and feel comfortable.

How our orthotics are made

The orthotics manufactured at Canadian Custom Lab are made from a cast taken of the client's feet. The cast is created by taking an impression. This allows the unique shape of the person's foot to become evident and correct any problem(s).

The orthotics are constructed of various orthopaedic materials such as Subortholon, Polypropylene, E.V.A. Poron, Nickleplast and plastazote. All are concerned with improving foot function and minimizing stress forces that could ultimately cause foot deformity and pain.

These materials are vacuum formed over a positive cast of the individuals feet then posted according to cast instructions. They are ground, polished and re-checked against the original requirements or prescription for accuracy.
